More specifically the statistics below represent the percentage of a school's borrowers who enter repayment on certain Federal Family Education Loan Program or William D. Ford Direct Loan Program loans during a particular fiscal year and default. These rates were for the 2008 fiscal year, the most recently available. The national rate for 2008 was 7.0%. Why we like cohort default rates?
Low default rates suggest that alumni are generally having a successful time repaying their student loans. The last thing you want after graduating is to be sitting on a pile of student loans that you have no way of repaying.
