Perparing an Autobiography for Online Classes

As you begin your online learning experience you will find that at the beginning of each of your courses the instructor will ask that you prepare and submit a 1-2 page autobiography so that you can get acquainted with your peers. In addition there will be an extensive list of other housekeeping items to complete prior to getting into the nitty gritty of the course. In an effort to save yourself time and to make sure that you are consistent presenting yourself appropriately, I suggest that you create an exceptional autobiography that can be saved and used for each of your courses.

autobiographyWhat to Include

Unlike a profile or curriculum vitae, a biography or autobiography presents a subject’s life story, highlighting various aspects of his or her life, including intimate details of experience, and may include an analysis of a subject’s personality. For the purpose of providing information that will allow your instructor and your peers to get to know you it is best if you do not dig too deep into your personal life.

Demographics

  • Include your name, age, marital status, and state in which you live
  • Never give your city or anything specific that will allow strangers to find your home

Interests

  • Provide your areas of interest including professional and personal interests
  • Remember to provide only tasteful and professional information

Reason for Seeking current degree

  • Explain why you are enrolled in an online program
  • If you are advancing your current degree explain the reason why

Your Philosophy

Only include your philosophy if you truly have one. Examples of this would be:

  • Teaching philosophy
  • Education philosophy
  • Nursing philosophy

Current Profession

  • Provide some information related to your current profession.
  • If you are currently an RN and are pursuing your BSN or MSN, provide information as to what area of nursing you are currently practicing in.

Formatting

Each instructor may ask you to format your autobiography in a specific format but for the most part they usually do not. Put your autobiography together in a format that you are comfortable with and save it in the same folder that you save other references that you utilize for your online courses. Remember that you can always go back and make corrections and also copy and paste it into a specific format requested by your instructor.

Although this may seem to be a very minute task to complete it is wise to cut corners in any area that will not be reflected in your success as a student. As you continue your courses there may be other similar submissions that are repeated for each course. If that is the case, go ahead and prepare an original document and save it. Remember to always reflect the correct course number, title and date in each submission.

Voila, you will now be able to take my little shortcut and utilize it when and where necessary as you pursue your online degree. Good luck in all of your upcoming endeavors.
