 chapter-4

So far you have chosen your remote education study course, learned the principles of behaviour shaping and goal oriented thinking, and the secret to keeping family and friends on board as well. Thanks for staying with me while we discussed these important things – in this chapter we turn to two, more practical matters.

Creating a Special Study Place

To apply the principles of behavior shaping to where you will be studying, you need a place to learn for your online education degree program where you do just that, and nothing else. Each time you successfully achieve that goal you will increase the likelihood of your repeating it, until, not long after you began, you will be head down and studying for hours at a stretch, regardless of what was happening around you at the time.

If you do other things while sitting there, like listening to what is happening around you, day dreaming, and surfing on the net, then you will not succeed with your internet degree program. This is because you will not spend enough time learning, and will not know enough to pass the end of term examination. You will become disillusioned and dispirited, and drift away.

Thus trying to study in the same room as the tv, in a busy family kitchen, or in a cramped room is not a good idea. Make sure you have a dedicated work surface where you can find your desk just as you left it and a door to the room that you can close behind you while you are learning

Establishing a Study Plan

Time is a strange thing. When we are bored it goes on for ever. When we are busy it vanishes as quickly as water in the desert sand. To succeed with an online degree study program, you need to set sufficient time aside for learning and in terms of a formal commitment too. As a rule of thumb, you will need at least one hour a day per subject – this will dictate how many subjects you can afford to tackle every year. In this regard, it is far better to pass two subjects, than to fail all six.

Let’s assume that you can find three hours a day to study, six days a week. I say six (and not seven) for two reasons – everybody needs a “Sunday off” – and you can choose any day you like. My second reason is even more profound. There will be days when you simply cannot study, and the spare day can be your space for catching up.

The hours that you choose to study can be in one block, with a coffee break between, or at various times of the day, in fact whenever suits you best. Here are a few pointers to help you make a wise decision:

  • Are you a morning person, or do you peak later in the day?
  • What best suits your immediate family living with you? What times must you be available for other things?
  • Depending on your special study place, when is it most likely to be the quietest time around you?
  • Do times off for lunch at work provide any opportunities.
  • Does your online education degree program impose constraints? For example, do you have to be available at certain times for group chats?

Once decided, please discuss the reasons behind your thinking with your immediate family. Make sure first that everybody agrees, and then obtain their support and commitment for the days and months that lie ahead. That’s because it takes time to study, and, if you don’t make sufficient time, you shouldn’t even bother with online education training.
